  1. HOW ALAN MET DENISE: They met at the Dairy Queen in Newnan, Georgia.
  2. FIRST JOB:At age 12, he took a job in a shoe repair shop
  3. OTHER JOBS: Car and Furniture Salesman, Carpenter, Home-builder, Garage Worker, Fork-lift Driver at K-Mart and Mailroom worker at TNN
  4. MUSICAL INFLUENCES: George Jones, Hank Williams, Sr., Hank William, Jr., Merle Haggard, George Strait, John Conlee, John Anderson and Gene Watson
  5. FIRST INSTRUMENT: A guitar he still owns that his parents bought for $50 when he was 16.
  6. FIRST PERFORMANCE: At 17, the role of Barnaby in a school production of “Oklahoma.”
  7. FIRST BAND: Dixie Steel (The name brand of a box of nails.)
  8. BIG BREAK: In 1985, Denise met Glen Campbell in an airport when she was working as a flight attendant. She told him about Alan and gave him a tape. Glen gave her his business card and suggested that Alan call Glen’s publishing company. A few months later, Alan and Denise moved to Nashville to start his road to the “Real World.”

Alan's Favorite


Ingredients:

1 large hen

3 lb lean pork

3 lb lean ground beef

3 16 oz cans ground tomatoes

2 large onions, chopped

5 oz Worcestershire sauce

2 cups ketchup

3 cups chicken broth

2 T vinegar

2 T lemon juice

1 28 oz can corn (or fresh)

Hot sauce to taste

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Cook pork and chicken until tender in boiling salt water.

Remove all meat from bone, keeping chicken separate.

Place ground beef and pork in broth.

Add tomatoes, onions, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, chicken broth, vinegar, and lemon juice. (All of these ingredients may vary because of weight of meat.)

Cook on low heat for approximately 45 minutes.

Add chicken, corn, hot sauce, salt and pepper to taste.

Cook another 15 to 20 minutes.

Stir constantly to keep from sticking. Will make a thick stew.

Serve with loaf bread, potato chips and pickles. Freezes well.
